Pilates was created by German born health and fitness advocate Joseph Pilates during the early 19th Century. Joseph suffered from Asthma, Ricketts and Rheumatic Disease in his early years but overcome these ailments to become a competent gymnast, diver and skier.
Joseph developed his Pilates is techniques to improve physical fitness during the First World War whilst interned as a German national and teaching fellow internees. During a spell as a Orderly in a hospital on Isle of Man Joseph worked with patients unable to walk using bed springs to support and strengthen patients.

The first Pilates studio was opened in New York in the 1920’s, where joseph brought together, dance, gymnastic, martial arts and ballet origins. Pilates focuses on breath awareness, spinal alignment, flexibility and core control.
Pilates 100 years on is now used in many different settings, assisting the rehabilitation and injury prevention as well and general strengthening and movement development.
